Gut Brain Axis

Eat Well, Guth Thrives, Mind Decides - repeat!
Collectable sticker #3
The Science:
Gut brain axis. The neuronal mass of the gut rivals that of the brain... making it a '2nd brain'.
Thats why sometimes food cravings can overwhelm clear thinking and why a proper diet is so important. The gut and the brain communicate through the vagus nerve, the superhighway between the 'two brains'. Trillions of bacteria in the gut actually produce neurotransmitters that can send signals to the brain through that vagus nerve. Therfore the gut microbiome plays a vital role in sending signals to the brain that then regulates the rest of the body... so, who is in charge?

DCAB. Neurons produce electrical nerve impulses at speeds reaching 50 to 120 meters per second (110 to 270 mph).
After that signal has been sent the nerve consumes a massive amount of calories to re-create the electro-chemical gradient within a few milliseconds (thousandth of a second). They do this by pumping ions (potassium and sodium) to opposite sides of the neuron cell membranes (inside is more negative than the outside). Now that you see how this works, you can understand that it is super important to have the right balance of ions (minerals) in the diet!

Collectable sticker #15
The Science:
Magnesium and zinc have a calming effect on the nervous system by binding to and inhibiting the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor to prevent it from opening.
However, when the right amounts of neurotransmitters bind to it the channel opens up and allows calcium to flow through it and for the signal to be sent. Without enough magnesium and zinc the channel becomes overly sensitive to transmitting the signal. This scenario is correlated to increased anxiety and nervousness. You can calm your bunny with a proper hay-based diet so they arent overly anxious, and only become excited when there is a real reason to unleash the zoomies.

A diet chronically deficient in chloride, due to an unbalanced DCAB, affects the balance of chloride in the brain and it's ability to maintain proper neuronal function. This next claim is bold and not backed by research... yet. It is possible that a chronic deficiency in chloride (and other important nutrients)may create a weakness that allows E. Coniculi, a common and, when established, fatal infection of the nervous system, to get root and wreak havoc. As with all disease, and ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Counting Calories? Try more protien for less fat

The Science:
Protein to energy ratio and energy balance/sources – a diet that has excess calories will increase fat storage... that part is obvious to most people! However, what most people dont know is that an isocaloric diet (keeping the calories the same) that provides more protein will decrease fat storage.
It does this in 2 ways. 1st, feeding protein causes what is called the "thermic effect of protein", meaning calories are burned to digest the protein than other types of nutrients. 2nd, more calories are also burned to assemble the protein (build stuff). Without enough protein (relative to calories in the diet) muscle fibers will be replaced with an accumulation of fat storage and a reduce the functioning of the muscle which accelerates it's decline.

Copper
Immune System
More Copper is Proper
Collectable sticker #58
The Science:
Copper, in my opinion, is the most underrated mineral. For example, it is found in its own version of Superoxide Dismutase, that first responder! It is a key component of the enzyme tyrosinase which makes pigments to color the skin and fur known as melanin.
More recently scientists have discovered that melanin interacts with infrared light to split water molecules to form the most potent antioxidant in the universe – molecular hydrogen! And this happens in mitochondria where it matters most. This is part of what the current craze about red-light therapy is all about. Even more important though, is the fork in the road between health and sickness that is defined by the copper containing enzyme known as Cytochrome C Oxidase. Energy production in every cell of the body depends on it! This enzyme is complex IV in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. All of those calories that have been eaten are either converted into energy that helps the cell do its duties and repair itself, or those calories are converted into oxidative stress (chronic inflammation) that destroys cells and triggers cancer pathways. Who knew copper was soooooooooooooo important!! This is why SPH formulas contain 5x more copper (in chelated form) than other brands ever since we were founded in 2011.

The Fight for Iron
Collectable sticker #59
The Science:
Iron – It is common knowledge that iron is used in red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. However, many immune system proteins (such as lactoferrin, siderocalin) actually prevent pathogenic bacteria from getting the iron that they need to grow.
It's like iron is in the middle of a tug-o-war. Iron is also used in many enzymes by immune cells, called macrophages, to kill pathogens. An iron deficiency makes it harder for macrophages to defend the body from germs!

Calcium
Collectable sticker #60
The Science:
Calcium, as most people know, is one of the minerals needed to build strong bones. Calcium is also required for muscles to work (calcium is stored in the sarcoplasmic reticulum and is released when triggered by nerve impulses to stimulate muscle contraction).
Those nerve impulses also require calcium to trigger neurotransmitter release at the synaptic junction between nerve cells.

The Science:
Vitamin D, as you may have already heard, aids in the development of strong bones. Vitamin D is also involved in muscle growth and repair. Vitamin D3 found in most brands is sourced from animals. Would this mean that your rabbit isn’t a vegetarian?
The amount of sun cured hay in SPH formulas provides ample amounts of vitamin D in the safe form (a variation of vitamin D2) a rabbits body systems are expecting it because can be converted to the active form of D3 on an as needed basis.... no risk of overdosing!

Long Stem Fiber
Digestive System
Proof is in the poop
Collectable sticker #63
The Science:
Long stem fiber is required to maintain proper gut transit times and to make good looking poops. Just how long is long stem fiber after your pet chews and swallows it?
Anything longer than 1.7 mm (for rabbits) the digestive tract decides to treat like long stem fiber... thats smaller than 7/100 of an inch! Usually long stem fiber is made of lignified (woody) stems of hay that resist being broken down while being chewed. Many people think it is OK to grind hay into a fine powder but that is wrong! These small peices of woody stems should not be fine ground for two reasons: 1. They won't function like long stem fiber anymore, 2. Wood is made of polyphenolic compounds that should be pooped out and not go into the ceacum where it will cause problems with gut bacteria. This is why rabbit poops are the cutest poops on earth.
The Proof: Their poops are larger and firmer than before...
I fed them pellets before but they rarely finished them. Chinchillas have such delicate digestive systems, when I saw all the extra stuff in there I considered just feeding them hay. But I know pellets are good for their teeth amd health. When I started giving them Sherwood pellets, they started eating their pellets every meal, they have more energy and their poops are larger and firmer than before. It even keeps them from wasting hay. - Wilhelmina Demissie
Prebiotics
Digestive System
Choose wizely - Prebiotics
Collectable sticker #64
The Science:
Short stem fiber/prebiotics. All undigested material smaller than 1.5 mm is likely transported into the cecum and becomes food for bacterial fermentation.
They produce volatile fatty acids which is a primary energy source. STASIS AND BLOATING is caused by the wrong foods getting into the cecum. For this reason, short-stem fiber is more important for digestive health. The wrong foods are: 1) fast fermenting fibers from salads, greens, and veggies, 2) excessive starch/carbohydrate loads from grain based pellets and treats, 3) polyphenolic compounds that originate from fine ground woody stems of hay.

Sherwood pellets have helped our little boy Harrison who suffers from megacolon. He now has less gas, no slushy urine, healthier bowel movements and no loose stools. Harrison has more energy and we just love seeing him do zoomies all day and night. Our baby Luci loves the pellets as well and has even more energy. - Susana Lewis
Protein
Digestive System
Protein powers the guts constant renewal
Collectable sticker #65
The Science:
Protein is the building blocks of the digestive system enzymes and cells.– The cells of the digestive tract have a high turnover (replacement) rate because of the fibrous diet and stressful environment. Without enough dietary protein to rebuild it, the digestive tract degrades faster than other areas of the body.

The Science:
Selenium. Do you remember reading about glutathione above? It is made from the sulfur containing amino acid cysteine and works with vitamin C as the main redox buffer system in every cell.
Some special enzymes use cysteine, but then replace the sulfur with selenium (known as selenocysteine). These enzymes are Glutathione Peroxidase and Thioredoxin Reductase and are key components of the anti-inflammatory system of the body. Selenium is also crucial for thyroid hormone production (master regulator of metabolism).

Collectable sticker #70
The Science:
Magnesium and Calcium are major players in regulating peristalsis (contraction and relaxation of the smooth muscle) of the digestive tract. Both of these nutrients are amply supplied by a hay-based diet.
Most brands of pellets have 3x less magnesium because they replace half the hay in the pellet with with soybean hulls.
The Proof: absolute massive healthy poops...
The switch to Sherwood's chinchilla pellets has been a positive change in Envy (and Grumpy's ( diet. Since we were at the end of our rope with her health declining, the switch was worth trying. This change has done wonders for her urinary health. Envy has been prone to UTIs since her arrival in 2016, and suffers from incontinence. We still have to clean her regularly but the crystalization of urine around her urethra has cleared up. The change in diet cannot change her age or overall health status, but we're hopeful this can lessen the amount of bladder-related complications we have and maybe even aid in her liver repairing itself. Even if it's just enough to give her more time, comfortably. We love our little moody possum girl. Another change we noticed is the absolute massive healthy poops. Envy and her cagemate Grumpy have switched to Sherwood and will stay on Sherwood. I'm considering switching the entire herd! Another big thank you to Sherwood for sending Envy the care package they did. We contacted them for a referral to a store near us that had their products in stock and instead, they shipped us pellets ASAP to try for Envy. We were not asked to share about the gift or updates on Envy, but I think this is worth sharing about. Now we're customers  Thank you for contributing to extra time with one of my best girls." - Amber Gold

The Proof: His poops are now always perfect big and golden!
My Rabbit Zuca is 9 and a half years old and blind. He has had joint and urinary issues throughout his life. A few months ago he collapsed and I brought him to the vet and they said he was too old to even test to see and to just keep him comfortable. Basically we thought he wouldn't make it through the weekend but luckily he is still here and thriving! I was using another brand food and supplements and I'm so glad I found Sherwood and switched! I was nervous to switch since he is so sensitive and I thought I would lose him recently but Sara from Sherwood talked me through it. She was so helpful and I trusted it would be good. I love how much better the ingredients are! I also switched him from 3rd cutting Timothy hay to 2nd cutting. He seems much more vibrant and runs a little more since the switch! His poops are now always perfect big and golden! I'm so happy to know he is getting the best! I only wish I knew about Sherwood sooner! Thank you for great products and a great company! And thank you Sara I appreciated the help so much!" - Kristine Carlson

DCAB to stay clean and clear
Collectable sticker #75
The Science:
DCAB (Dietary Cation Anion Balance) is the primary driver of urine pH. A proper DCAB can lower the urine pH to reduce urinary sludge and even dissolve kidney and bladder stones!
Most brands are deficient in anions which increases urine pH and is the cause of urinary sludge.

Both my guinea pigs and rabbits had urinary and sludge issues while using the Oxbow brand. Once I learned about Sherwood I quickly switched. OMG! My bunnies coats are soooo thick and fluffy!! They are visibly shinier and I can’t believe how much of a difference it has made for their coats. My babies no longer have smelly urine and no more sludge!!! I did tons of research and hated all the fillers that other major brands had. I feel a lot better knowing my babies aren’t getting pumped full of junk! Thank you, Sherwood! - Ashlee Barnhart

That smell of ammonia also upsets the DCAB increasing urine pH, sludge and the risk of stones.
The Proof: Sludge free... stone free... no more blood in their urine!
Early July I noticed both of my guinea pigs had blood in their urine. I was pretty devastated to find out that Cupcake had a bladder stone and Popcorn had bladder sludge. My vet and I agreed that surgery was a last option, and I started looking for anything I could do at home to help my piggies beyond their meds. I found out about Sherwood through the guinea pig subreddit, there were multiple success stories where the piggies were able to pass their stones with the help of Sherwood's Urinary Support Tablets (UST). I thought why not and went for it, adding in the Free Choice pellets to see if that helped (thankfully they love those pellets too). When I needed further clarification/assistance, Sara was super awesome in getting my questions answered. She even sent a trial pack of the Prevention Tablets when Cupcake was refusing to eat the UST (she now happily gobbles it up). Now Popcorn is sludge free and Cupcake may also be stone free, as both have no more blood in their urine! I will forever be team Sherwood!" - Kendra Fleming

Hi! I run Bunlandia Rabbit Rescue and I just wanted to let you know that I switched over Zelda, our 16lb Flemish sanctuary bun to the Free Choice Timothy pellet and she loves it! She came to us only eating a lower quality "rabbit feed," so to get her on such an improved diet is awesome! We have also been using the urinary and joint supplements and I cannot believe the difference in her in under a month! She had very thick sludge and it's completely gone. Our girl is jumping on the furniture and doing binkies with all 4 feet getting off the ground! Previously, she would only do the "head binkies." Getting 16lbs off the ground is no small feat and we are just overjoyed with the improvement in Zelda's quality of life." - Sara Pereiras
Zinc

Zinc
Collectable sticker #78
The Science:
Zinc helps build and maintain strong bones by stimulating osteoblast cells (that build bone) and suppress osteoclast cells (that degrade bone), thus tipping the balance towards stronger bones.
Zinc also stimulates the formation of bone collagen, the framework that holds all of the minerals in bone together. Who knew that strong bones require much more than just calcium? Zinc is also required for vitamin D to work properly in cells and is essential for the proper activity of enzymes involved in protein synthesis needed for strong muscles.
The Proof: Our rabbits have gained muscle...
We love the simple, high quality ingredients and lack of fillers. Our rabbits have gained muscle, eat more hay, and drink more water since switching to Sherwood. It seems expensive but is actually cheaper than alternatives given the smaller serving size - really a great product at a great price." - Jennifer Krawec
